Mauna Kea, is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii, where I live. Standing 4,207 m above sea level, its peak is the highest point in the state of Hawaii. The Hawaiian name "Mauna Kea" means "White Mountain". Most people don't think about snow or glaciers in Hawai?i, but geologists have long recognized deposits formed by glaciers on Mauna Kea during recent ice ages. The latest work indicates that deposits of three glacial episodes since 150,000 to 200,000 years ago are preserved on the volcano. |
